Joanna is a Native Floridian who has been training dogs for over 35 years. She started as a teenager in Miami and has trained alongside some amazing professionals. Back in the day it was books and apprenticing with others in your field to gain the experience necessary to modify the unwanted behavior and to progressively teach a young pup (or adult) to work in sync with his/her owner. Joanna apprenticed with Gary Fondren while also working at veterinarian hospitals. For these two years she gained extensive experience with the public; especially the family unit.
But during this period, Joanna realized that dogs need to be treated with more understanding and patience. Knowing that no two dogs are the same and given the proper amount of time, with well-informed insights, all dogs, even the ones that supposedly could not be trained or the ones that were branded as dropouts or failures could benefit with kind, compassionate and gentle training. So, this is what she focused on for the next ten years. She knew that no two dogs are alike and on top of that no two owner’s expectations and needs were the same.
This is how Tropical K-9 Consultants was born. Through research, time, discipline and a lot of love and patience, Joanna has formed a company that is innovative and professional.
Joanna also was involved with the dog sport called Schutzhund. Working and training with and for some of the greats like Phil Holsher, Rick Trezona, Annitta Chandler and Adonis Fleitas. Schutzhund is an Olympic level Handler/Dog sport that requires a huge amount of discipline, consistency and dedication. It encompasses Obedience, Agility, and Tracking. She worked together as a husband and wife team with Adonis Fleitas who was the Training Director of the South Florida Schutzhund Club.
Tropical K-9 Consultants comes to you in your home, where your pup/dog is most comfortable. This is the place where comfortable, undistracted ‘teaching’ begins. Teaching...yes teaching, not training. Training implies correction and in Joanna’s opinion, a dog should not be physically corrected to learn something new. Joanna’s use of words, tone, redirection is just the beginning of what you will learn once enrolled in one of her customized programs.
When people ask Joanna how much do one of her programs cost, her answer is this; ‘Each program is customized. Because no two dogs are the same and no two family’s expectations are the same, we will come to your home to meet your pup/dog and sit with you to go over everything with you to develop a customized program that suits your budget. My evaluations are free and there will be no high-pressure sales. When is a good time for you?’
